Tyler Richards Memorial Scholarship Fund
Shortly after our son’s death, friends began a scholarship fund in Tyler’s memory. The fund is part of Legacy Scholarship Funds, Inc. in Walled Lake, Michigan. The fund is supported by family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches and all who loved him.
Tyler was a junior at Walled Lake Northern High School before a tragic accident took his life on September 21, 2003. Tyler loved life, was a friend to all who met him, and always saw the best in everyone. As a member of the football team and an accomplished wrestler, Tyler was also very proud to be part of the Positive Peer Influence (PPI) program at Northern. He enjoyed working with his peers and teammates. His genuine, ever-present, crooked smile will forever be his trademark.
The mission of the Tyler Richards Memorial Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarship assistance to graduating seniors from Walled Lake Northern High School who best exemplify the qualities that Tyler exhibited: a kind and gentle soul, a true friend, and a lover of life with boundless energy and an ever present smile. It is the wish of our family that Tyler’s spirit lives on through the successful achievements of other Walled Lake Northern students.
The following is an excerpt from my 2013 Legacy Scholarship presentations of the Tyler Richards Memorial Scholarship. In 2013, we were able to present scholarships to four very deserving graduating seniors:
I believe that our son Tyler’s memory is kept alive through these scholarship presentations. I believe that every parent here tonight is filled with pride over the accomplishments of their children. It is hard for me to believe that for nine years, I have given the same message to parents…do not miss even one opportunity to tell your son or daughter just how proud you are of them and that you love them unconditionally. It gives our family so much pleasure to present scholarships in Tyler’s memory to four “Shining Stars” among Walled Lake Northern students. And I believe that there is no better way to reward a job well done or to help a child achieve their goals than to assist with their education.
One dollar ($1.00) per book sale from A Far Cry…From Home will be donated to the Tyler Richards Memorial Scholarship Fund.
